All jaws were wide open and not a voice could be heard. It took a few minutes to come to the realization that they may have finally found the large vein talked of so many years along.

Black Jack broke the silence with an “welllll…….I’lll beee” as Goldsmith wiped his brow and steadied his gaze.

“Black!” he said in an almost reverent voice, “do we have enough light to dig a little?” Black pondered the thought, it was all he wanted to do at this point but with the memories of past saddening stories of those who rushed headlong into trouble he sighed and declared, “We best be startin’ fresh in the morning Goldsmith. It be wisest, yes I believe so with the large hole and all, to work around.”

Goldsmith exhaled a long. deep breath ,having held in his thoughts and a wish to scream in glee. “I suppose you’ve got it right, Black. Morning it is then. That said we had better board up the entrance a bit just to keep things quiet. Also don’t want anyone to slip into the deep crevasse, no we don’t want that.”

As night began to fall the entrance of the mine was decently boarded up and the weary men reluctantly started heading back to the lights that were now glowing in the dark, cool evening.

The stars were particularly bright in the nights sky as the men chattered about the day, trying to contain their excitement as they bid each other a good evening.

It was a day of great discovery and a new chapter to begin in the small village.

Goldsmith stepped onto his welcoming porch as he reached for the lantern, set it to lite and prepared his evening fire, hoping he could possibly sleep at all.
